Service provision at OATC includes:
- assessing a consumer's need for assistive technology,
- providing short-term loan equipment,
- completing individual
requests to public and private funding sources for
the purchase of AT,
- adapting or modifying the
technology, and
- teaching consumers and
significant others how to use (or support
the use of) and maintain assistive
technology devices
Types of AT Services provided at OATC:

Augmentative & Alternative
Communication (AAC) includes determining
the most appropriate way for people with disabilities
to interact socially and communicate individual
wants and needs. Some forms of AAC include gestures,
facial expressions, picture symbols/boards, and
voice output communication devices.
- Computer Access (CA):
Includes examining the way in which the consumer provides input to a computer.
Examples include system utility modifications, modified keyboards, alternative
mouse inputs, screen enlargement, screen readers, etc.
- Environmental Control includes
determining the most efficient way for people with
disabilities to control appliances (i.e. blender, television,
radio), utilities (heat/air, opening/closing blinds),
or toys in their environment.
- Positioning includes determining
the amount of support a consumer requires to sit or
stand, and then ensuring the supports are provided
either through commercially available off-the-shelf
systems, or customized systems, which are fabricated
in OATC's on-site workshop.
- Custom Seating/Equipment Construction includes
fabricating customized seat and back cushions for people
with disabilities to use in wheelchairs, strollers,
or other positioning/mobility devices. OATC has a workshop
on-site for fabrication purposes.
- Mobility includes determining
the most efficient way for people with disabilities
to move in their environment. Examples of mobility
devices include: canes, crutches, walkers, strollers,
manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, adapted battery-power
cars, and scooters.
- Splinting includes fabricating
arm and foot splints for people with disabilities who
cannot maintain proper alignment of the hands and feet
without such support.
