Assistive Technology Consultation Procedures
An Assistive Technology Consultation is a free service provided by the Oklahoma Assistive Technology Center (OATC) in cooperation with the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Special Education Services. Please note a consultation is not an evaluation. For more information on Assistive Technology Evaluations, please see Assistive Technology Evaluation Procedures.
The consultation from OATC will include:
- Observing the student during typical educational activities;
- Interviewing team members involved in student’s typical educational activities, such as family members, teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, etc. to gain additional information about the student’s needs, abilities, tasks, and/or curricular demands;
- Sharing general information about a range of AT options;
- When appropriate, introducing and/or loaning potential AT devices and/or strategies specific to the student’s needs given the demands of the educational environment(s);
- Providing resources and/or information for implementing trials with AT devices and solutions;
- Documenting and sharing AT recommendations for IEP team consideration in a written report.
The Assistive Technology Consultation from OATC will NOT include:
- Conducting multiple observations of the student;
- Observing the student in an environment in which he/she does not typically participate;
- Administering standardized tests/evaluations;
- Recommending specific AT devices that must be purchased and/or implemented by the IEP team. The IEP team will make the final decision about what, if any, AT will be provided;
- Attending IEP meetings.
