ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT

According to IDEA, (§300.6 Assistive Technology Services), assistive technology assessment is a process during which information is gathered in order to make assistive technology/service decisions. For students served in public schools, IDEA states that AT assessments must be conducted by professionals who are knowledgeable in regards to assistive technology and they should occur in the individual’s customary environment. In addition, the assessment process must reflect multidisciplinary involvement, which means that at least two different disciplines should be involved. In general, best practice indicates that assistive technology assessments for any individual should be informal rather than standardized; a process rather than a one-time event; and on-going in nature. As the individual, his/her environment(s), and the tasks he/she needs to complete change over time, the assistive technology needed to meet each individual’s needs may change as well.

Below is a collection of articles, handouts/forms, and useful links related to the AT assessment in the public school environment. In particular, the SETT framework created by Joy Zabala is an excellent resource for assisting AT teams in gathering and organizing assessment information and making decisions about strategies and devices to try. We’ve also included sample assessment templates to help you document and organize your findings.
